Buzzwords – A Double Edged Sword

Blah Blah Blah

Language Without Substance is Your Enemy

Buzzwords can be a real inhibitor when job hunting. Nothing can be more infuriating than reading a passage or text crammed with jargon and buzzwords to the point whereby the real meaning becomes lost. When an employer examines a resume / CV they are relying on you to display your career information in a clear and concise manner. This means avoiding unnecessary, meaningless language.

The desperate feeling of filling a resume / CV by using box-ticking words can become painfully obvious if you overindulge in buzzwords and jargon. This can cripple your job search and lead to you being overlooked by employers.

Example

‘I am a hardworking, determined, passionate, driven, enthusiastic worker with extensive experience.’

Anyone can simply pack their resume / CV with these words with little regard for what they actually mean. Employers aren’t interested in abstract concepts about working ability. What they crave is detailed examples of how you implicitly demonstrate these qualities through your work. Therefore, if you can cite solid examples that demonstrate the qualities of your work your resume / CV won’t even require the use of buzzwords.

Example

‘My duties include; routinely volunteering to assist my store with product promotions and the development of new merchandising concepts to advertise our products.’

This example implies that the candidate is driven, ambitious, willing to demonstrate creativity, business/product aware and selfless. Following with an example of how this work benefitted the business would make the whole approach even more impressive to an employer. Explain the impact of your work. Did you generate more income, boost efficiency, save time or develop a new skill? These are the aspects of your work that employers want to read about in your resume / CV.

In Conclusion

If you are going to use buzzwords and jargon, use them sparingly. Buzzwords must be coupled with solid examples that demonstrate said qualities i.e. buzzwords. Reinforce the example by giving details on the impact your work has/had. With this approach, job hunting will become much easier and your job search will become abundantly more successful.
